storyboard analysis

We created a storyboard using imovie to see how the shots we were deciding to use worked together. This will now make our filming a lot easier as we have planned out what shots we are going to use. By using imovie is ensured that our shots are working well together and our shots flow smoothly. The storyboard we created worked as a test film for our music video, so then we can develop on our storyboard by adding more shots etc, to make sure our music video is created to the highest standard we can possibly make it. Our storyboard reflects the shots we want to use in our music video and the order we want the shots to be taken in.

Deciding the Album Cover Name.

After researching into a various amount of 'Pop' album covers we agreed to use the name 'EXCLUSIVE!' as our main album name. We are going to recreate a similar album cover that The Saturdays produced as the balance of colors looked very effective. The name 'EXCLUSIVE!' fits in nicely with the idea of our album because we want the album to be bright and colourful with the five girls looking girly, cheerful yet sexy and provocotive through there clothing and pose.
We think that the use of colors on the album cover that The Saturdays produced which was labelled 'Headlines' looked very appealing due to each of the girls holding a magazine which had two letters of the name on the cover each holding them different to look very effective.
We intend to use a lot of bright lighting so the pale background will stand out more, we can edit the brightness on the editing machine if we need to. The background color we are planning on shooting the cover on will most likely be white to make the girls stand out more and the color of their clothing stand out more.
We are planning on wearing quite Provocative outfits but also have them look casual and affordable for our audience to create. The outfits we have chosen will have to fit in with our 'Pop' genre conventions in order to keep the genre reflecting through the images we create.

Rick Altman - Theorist.

Rick Altman came up with four different points on media theory..
'1) Genre theory presumes that viewers pre - read texts.
2) Viewers become passive voyeurs
3) Genres are therefore restrictive
4) Does not acknowledge or allow for the hybrid - The blending of genres'.
This theory does not relate to our project because I believe that The Saturday's Song 'Work' that we have chosen to recreate does not fit in with any other genre and can only be called as a 'Pop' genred girl band creating 'Pop' genred songs. I believe this for the following reasons:
- The song is very popular, cheerful, upbeat and catchy that appeals to a wide audience.
- Our video includes a simple dance rountine which is a typical convention of a 'Pop' genre video.
- Our band brings across a very happy, stylish yet sexy image to appeal to variety of viewers.
- The all around mise-en scene used within the video follow the 'Pop' conventions.
- The way that the song is performed also shows that they have a happy and bubbly image and can only fit within the 'Pop' genre whereas 'Rap/RNB' would bring across a more agressive harder image.

Edward Buscombe - Theorist.

Edward Buscombe felt that Inconography was the best way to achieve generic definitions. Inconography means certain icons that may be used when producing a film or music video in order to achieve generic definitions. Edward's theory relates to our project as we are using inconography to bring across the genre by coming across as happy, cheerful and bubbly people to a young and older audience. But at the same time they follow a sexy and provocative image to be more up to date with the singers they are competiting against and come across as a modern girl band. Therefore our band is able to icons for many viewers and at the same time fit in with our chosen genre by following their typical conventions.

Richard Maltby & Ian Cravey - Theorist.

These two theorists came up with a simple theory.. 'The success of hollywood is reliant on the combination of predictable elements with variation'
Our project relates to this theory as The Saturdays are a classic icon of a 'Pop band' that have been put together to appeal to a large audience of a mixture of genders. They follow the typical conventions of a 'Pop' genre through the image they bring across, the clothes they wear and the innocent personality they show to there target audience. They are an extremely popular and well known girl band and have a very clear image that puts them across as a very predictable girl band as there songs are all similar in different ways.

Considering Genre Theory - John Fiske - Theorist.

The theory that John Fiske came up with was.. 'Any one programme will bear the main characteristics of its genre, but is likely to include some from others: ascribing it to one genre or another involves deciding which set of characteristics are most important'.
This relates to our project as have followed the typical genres that relate to our genre which is 'Pop' and applied this to the project we are trying to create, such as including a dance routine in our video. However we have also tryed to challenge the typical conventions and not include every small detail used in a 'Pop' music video as we have tryed to make the music video different but still falling into the same genre. Instead of following the typical things that a 'Pop' genre would do such as producing a cheesy bubbly song and dressing in very bright colours to appeal to a very young audience and having a dance rountine with simple moves so younger children can quickly pick up. We also twicked the video slightly by using different camera shots etc. We decided to challenge the conventions and make our image come across as more modern and up to date with the fashion so aswell as it appealing to a younger audience it will also appeal to an older audience. We came to the decision that we want to make the genre clear and obvious by including a dance rountine that a 'Pop' genre would typically use and by also including different characteristics by having more of a mature and modern image.

Common Stereotypes about the 'Pop' genre.

There are many groups and singers out there who fall into the Pop genre with thier music and the image they bring across to their target audience. Stereotypes are the image you exspect to see on a certain person.

Representation.

Through creating a 'Pop' music video that includes advertising a young girl band to bring across the image of young, sexy, stylish and feminine to a large audience by using different camera work, movements and angles it helps us to show the respresentation in our work.
In our project we are representing Female Artists/Groups. Typically girl bands are instantly associated with the idea of being seductive and feminine, but me and my group wanting to challenge the typical conventions and respresent our girl band as being more stylish rather than just sexy or seductive.
Respresentation is very important when making a music video because

Promotional Photo

These images are imaged we have created to use as are 'Promotional Photos' for our company that will be included in our CD booklet that we are going to produce later on in our project. We decided to use the color red as rouge means red so we thought that color would feel in well with the theme of our logo.

Timeline - our plan.

We have created a timeline of what we plan to have completed in the next month and the order we plan to do this in. We have produced the dance and are in the stage of practising and learning the dance rountine. Now that we have started practicing the routine and are in the stage of filming practice shots of it to see if there are any changes that need to make in it we are focusing on getting the rest of our work done.
The next part of our agenda is to produce the storyboard for our video, this is the most crucial part of the project as we have to plan what will use and what work well together and what locations we are going to use to shoot our video in.
- Group discussions of ideas
-Create a blog
-Planning
-Research
-Creating the dance routine
-Learn the dance routine
-Storyboard
-Research
- Location shots
- Practice photos for the CD cover, magazine etc.
-Photoshoot
- editing
- costume etc...
-Practice filming
-Filming
-Editing
-Make any changes to the dance, shots or costumes.
-Evaluation and analasis.

Ancilliary - Brief

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promotion video, together with two of the following three options:
- A website homepage for the band
- A cover for its release on CD
- A magazine advertisment for the Album
In your group: imagine you are a new marketing/ distribution company. A new artist/ group have produced an album and have now approached your company to market and distribute it. Decide on a name for your company and a logo as these should appear on your blog.

digital technology

The digital technology we are going to use when producing our media practical will be a video camera so we can capture the right shots and bring the video together, a hand held camera/ black photography camera so we can get good quality shots for our CD cover and photo shoots as the higher quality the camera is the better the pictures will come out and the more our outfits/make-up will stand out more in the photos.
The other type of digital technology we will be using will be an editing machine because then we can edit the video and photos to make the shots look continuity and not out of place. This will make each cut look invisible and the video will flow through without it stopping or shots looking out of place.
We will also be using photoshop to edit our logo and pictures on so we can change the contrast and the brightness.

video ideas

Through researching various artists we had many different ideas that we wanted to create such as recreating Pixee lott, the Sugarbabes etc, until we finally decided to come together as a big group and do a band that had a number of people so we could all contribute and play a part in the recreation. After alot of thought we decided to choose 'The Saturdays'.
It was hard narrowing the search down, because we had numerous ideas and we all had different ideas and thoughts about what we could do.
Pixee Lott - 'turn it up' was a option we thought are choosing because shes young, trendy, fits into the pop genre we were set on creating and her music is good and really catching. She appeals to a young target audience and we felt shes young and stylish and people look up to her, so we thought she would be a good person to follow and she is seen as a role model and it very popular in the music industry because of her catchy songs and videos.
Sugarbabs - 'about a girl'. Instead of doing a solo artist and only having one member of our group doing the most work and the others being the backup dancers we thought a group would be more fair as eveyrone would have a part to play and could contribute to the practical fairly. The Sugarbabes are made up of a girl group of three that appeal to a young target audience and bring across a sexy image. We decided we could recreate this girl band because their video includes a dance rountine which we wanted to do, there music is catchy and we liked the ideas of there being a few people singing rather than only one of our group doing most of the work.
The Saturdays - 'Work'. The Saturdays were the ones which finally stood out to us the most, as we had a group of 4 people so we decided we wanted to create a girl band so we could all contribute into being a part of the video. The Saturdays bring across a sexy and seductive image by the costumes and make up they wear, expecially in their video work which attracted many viewers. We particulary liked this song because of the dance rountine, the upbeat catchy music and the way the video looked constantly appealing and moving.

As you can see from the information above we did have a lot of different artists we were thinking of creating before we finally stuck with 'The Saturdays, Work'.

conventons of our chosen genre.

Genre is a expressive style of music that a band or singer chooses to follow and create.
The genre we have specifically chosen to create is 'Pop' and to do this we are going to recreate 'The Saturdays' band by bringing across the same image as they do which is sexy, we are going to target a young audience like they do which is 14 - 20 year olds, most probably females. We came to a decision of creating the pop song 'Work'.
To reflect the pop genre in our music video we are going to have to come across as young and trendy by dressing in fashionable clothes and not looking to old and boring. The genre pop can be reflected through us using bright colors and and copying the image that The Saturdays and Pixee lott bring across to their target audience.

The typical conventions of a girl band for a music video are that they wear fashionable outfits, either quite bright colors to go with the theme of the video and the song or all in black to fit in with the sexy image they tend to bring across. The pop genre music video tends to include a dance rountine which is quite simple so there audience can catch the moves and dance along so it appeals to their target audience as it makes the video more interesting to watch.
The videos a pop genre creates are usually set outdoors walking down a road or dancing outside etc, or in a studio on a plain black or white background but this all depends on their song as the vdeo tends to relate to the lyrics in the song.
In the video we have chosen, 'Work', is set inside with them doing a dance routine on a large stage with dark lighting and flashing spotlights to make the girls stand out and look effective. It also shows various shots of each of the girls alone or sat on a sofa leaning against a prop such as steps.
The video is set in a variety of places and they cut from shot to shot to make the video more interesting and appealing to their audience.

target audience.

The target audience for our music video is going to be 14 - 20 year olds, as we are in the same age group and we know what would appeal to them. This audience would relate more to our band. The song that we have chosen which is 'The Saturday's' Work would appeal to younger age group, because of the upbeat music and our video will also include dance rountine so this will interest our target audience into the video more and will make it more interesting to watch.
As this is our target audience we will need to make sure that our costumes and makeup for the video are really trendy as it is very common for young artists to be fashinable and bring across a good positive image for a young target audience to see and look up to.

storyboard.

plan for CD cover - our shoot.

After researching many CD covers we have came to the decision about the layout, colors and the shot we want to use for the image to make the girls stand out and look appealing to a wide audience.
We researched a wide range of The Saturdays CD covers and they give us the inspiration to produce a cover that was similar to the layout they follow but put our own ideas with the idea to create a cover idea.
Most CD covers only contain one image on the front so we decided we would have a establishing shot of the five of us so you can see the costumes we are wearing and see the location the shot was took in. The Saturdays tend to be very dressed up on their CD covers so have decided to follow the similar trend and wear very sexy perogratitive outfits to send across the same image they do to their target audience.

copyright.

Copyright - is a set of exculsive rights that are granted to an author or creater of an orignial piece of work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work.
Before we go ahead and use the 'The Saturdays' song 'Work' and recreate their video we need to make sure we get permission of them before we go ahead with our plans. Otherwise we would be copying and stealing their idea.
To get their permission we wrote them an email:

Email to The Saturdays.

Dear The Saturdays,
we are currently studying A2 media studies and have to make a music video for our course work. We have decided to choose your band to base our music video on with the song '
Work' because we feel inspired by your music and feel that we can create a suitable music video for our A2 practical production.

Kind regards,

Nicole Williams, Daisy Flynn, Isabelle Jordan-Mellersh and Stephanie Purvis.

shooting list.

When we startng filming in our first location which is a stage in our school's main hall, we are going to be mainly using:
Long shots -to show the whole of our bodies including our outfits etc, and so it shows our dance more clearly to watch.
Close ups -to show our facial expressions and to have a better view of our body parts such as feet to show the dance moves we do with our feet etc.
Mid shots -to show a clearer view of our facial expressions whilst dancing and to make it clear which character is singing their particular part of the song. Mid shots will show from our waist upwards.
Pan & Tilt - we may add a few of these shots in to add some interest to the shots so the video is more effective and get a better view of us dancing from different angles.

Then when we film in our second location we are going to include shots such as:
Mid shots - so you can clearly see each character singing and the costume they are wearing and this shows the actions they use as well to express the emotion/ idea of the song.
Close up's - to show the facial expressions being used by each character and the emotion in their face whilst they are singing.
Long shots - to show off the costumes which each person is wearing and show the location and the props we are using.
Extreme Close up's - to show our facial expressions, make up and body parts/ props that are of importance during the song.

Mid shots and Long shots are the typical shots we are going to use as these are the most effective shots.

roles.

There are five members of my group, although one of the members does not do media we needed her to participate as our fifth band members because The Saturdays are made up of five girls and we only had four who are doing media studies. Me, Daisy, Issy and Steph are four doing media as A2 so we are going to be the ones who play the roles which have a lot to sing and do. Each of us are going to be acting out as a member of The Saturdays, for example we have:
Nicole playing - Rochelle Wiseman
Daisy playing - Frankie Sandford
Issy playing - Mollie King
Steph playing - Vannessa White
Becky playing - Una Healy

As well as asking the four of us doing media are going to be participating in taking it in turns to film, using the camera, the editing, ideas and contributing in making the album cover.
We are going to make sure we plan out our time well and do not waste any valuable time doing nothing. Individually we are doing our research and posting all of our information onto our seperate blogs, whilst working together as a group to think of ideas. for example: ideas on what we are going to for our album cover, font, picture etc.

mise - en - scene.

For our music video we have come to the decision to film it in two different locations, the main hall and the photography studio. The lighting in the scenes filmed on the stage will be quite dark with a few flashing lights and spotlights to create the effect of performing a show. Whereas in the photography studio the lighting will be alot brighter and we can adjust it so this will make the shots alot clearer so you can see who's singing and what time and the costumes we are wearing. We hav decided that we are all going to be wearing black dress/shorts with high heels when performing the dance rountine to follow the sexy image 'The Saturdays' bring across to their audience.
We have decided we are going to keep the props to a minmial as we dont have a budget.
There will be alot of bright lights with a black setting when we are in the hall, then in the photography studio the lighting will be very bright so there is a slight contrast in color to give off that dramatic effect.
When filming in the photography studio we are planning on wearing more casual clothes such as black leggins and a bright plain colored top with a pair of heels. Instead of wearing all black we decided to wear a colored top so it will add a splash of color to the video and the heels will help us to bring across the sexy image 'The Saturdays' usually bring across to their target audience. We decided to use some props in the video, just like 'The Saturdays' do in their video. After watching the video '
Work' over and over again we have decided which props we are going to use when creating our video. We are going include props accosicated with the video 'Work' the name of the song and performing. These will include props such as microphones, chair, weights, as this will add more interest to the video.
After researchng 'The Saturdays' in a lot of detail we noticed that they always wear alot of big make-up so this is what we are also going to do throughout our video. Dark smokey eyes, brightly colored lips, false eyelashes so we come across really feminine and seductive and sexy.

Location Planning

Where to film?
For our music video we are going to produce the group has come to a decision to shoot different parts of the video in two locations. The first location we are going to use is in our School, which will be in the main hall because it has a stage and alot of space so we can do our dance rountine and have the camera doing a panning movement around us. We thought the hall would be a good area to shoot the dance rountine in because in the video they have a similar theme where a stage is used, we also want our dance rountine to be seen clearly and have lots of space for us to perform in. We are going for similar ideas to 'The Saturdays'.
For our second location we have have decided to use the photography studio and use a plain white background. We choose to use a plain white background because we wanted quite a simple background, but still wanted it to look effective, and because there is nothing going on in the background then the audience will be more focused on the girls rather than the location. This location will be mostly used for the single shots and close ups, whereas the stage will be used for our dance rountine.

Influences

Me and my group decided we were going to produce a girl band music video. We researched various different artists and bands before deciding that we were going to recreate a girl band as we all wanted to be involved in the video and had a lot of ideas to make it appealing and interesting to watch. Procuding a girl band would be the best option for us because then all of us could be involved in the video and it would be an interesting task to do. We finally decided to re-create the video 'Work' by 'The Saturdays'. This was the one video we all agreed that we liked and we could re-create our own version of the video and the band.
Most girl bands fall into the genre of 'Pop' and some of their songs tend to be quite cheesy. We felt that the genre pop could be quite a simple yet an effective genre to use for our video, example of this genre include; girls aloud and the sugarbabes.
We watvhed and analysed a few of their music videos but decided that it was definiate we were going to do the 'The Saturdays, Work' as it was more appealing to what we were going for. The girls are a similar age group to us so it would be easier for us to appeal to as we know what girls are age want to see and it would be easier for us to target our target audience.
We also all agreed on their music and had a lot of ideas how we would set this music video up, such as the location, costumes, dance rountines. We wanted to include a dance routine to fit in with the conventions of the 'pop' genre, and felt we could do this with the song we chose.

Analysis of existing music - Analysis 3

Sugababes - 'Round, Round'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHh86ySgKrA
The whole of this music video is set in the same location, this doesn't give the video a lot of variety and it less interesting to watch and may not attract alot of the audience into the video. Although it would be a more simple video to film. This video firstly contains an establishing shot to show where the video is taking place and to set the scene and introduce the singers. A high angle pan is then used to show the band dancing as they sing and then a mid shot tilts downward. This is effective as it adds interest and variety to the video. There is also a lot of long shots of the girls used when there dancing to show there whole body and get there costume in the shot, in this video they are trying to maintain their sexy image by wearing very revealing, black clothes to appeal to a wider audience which is usually young girls and women aged 14-20. They are also appealing to men with this image but not as much with their music. The video involves close ups of televisions with the girls singing and dancing on them, this again adds more interest to the video. There are pan mid shots used of the band and mid shots of people dancing around the sides as well in a cage, this helps fit with the lyrics of the song and make the video look more enjoyable. This video uses the effect of the girls spinning around, and has objects flying around them to give the effect, this makes the video fit the idea of the song and makes it look more appealing. By using a variety of camera shots it made the video look more interesting and by them cutting to different shots it makes the video look more interesting and appealing.

Analysis of existing music - Analysis 2

Girls Aloud - Biology
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBPtP4t2J1k
The location of the video is set in the same place throughout the whole video. Although the camera routates through each scene so there is a sudden change in set and constumes etc. The video contains a lot of close ups of each of the girls faces to show their facical expressions and their make-up. The camera is focused on the girls or each of the girls throughout the whole video, you only see the location of where the video is set at the start of the video. Long shots have been used to show the dance rountine they are performing and the outfits they are wearing to bring across the 'sexy' image they want to bring across to their target audience. Throughout the whole video the girls have three set costume changes that pan across so you can see the change happen. The costumes they have choosen fit in well with there sexy girly image they want to bring across, but are each very different and have their own uniqueness to their individual outfits.
Firstly they are dressed in black party dresses with a bit of sparkle on them, then there is a complete contrast as they change into old fashioned pink party dresses which establishes then as girly more than sexy when they are in this outfit. Then finally they wear all black with red, tight dresses.
There are a lot of editing effects used in this music video as certain parts of the girls dancing toward the camera are speeded up. The girls are also blurred out a little in the video and then they edit them again to make them appear in the set. A change back through each outfit with a blurred effect happens for a few seconds here. Then the video cuts back to previous rooms and the camera pans through each room very fast to give of an effective look in the video as it gives the idea of them being in more than one place at the same time and makes the video more appealing to their audience.
The whole video looks very effective when the camera cuts and uses different shots as if they used the same shots throughout the whole video or did not change the angle of the camera then the video would not be very appealing.

Analysis of existing music - Analysis 1

Analysis 1: Pixee Lott 'Turn it up'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvRDJe5a51g&feature=player_detailpage#t=3s
Pixee lott is a young singer who works mostly in the genre 'Pop & Hip Hop'. All of her songs are very catchy, with an upbeat feel to them. The video contains a catchy dance rountine which continues throughout her whole video, with many long shots of Pixee and her back up dancers dancing to show body shots and show clear shots of the dance rountine. The video does not just contain shots of them all dancing, it tells a story so the camera uses a variety of shots and swifts from shot to shot. By using long body shots it helps to show off the costume that Pixee is wearing, it involves her wearing her trademark high waisted shorts that show off her image. It helps to fit in with the image that she wants to get across to her target audience as being sexy by showing skin, such as her legs but in a subtle way and still showing she is sending across a positive image and now showing to much skin or revealing to much. Her trademark shorts are keeping up with the fashion, as she wants to come across as stylish to her target audience and appeal to them as this is mainly young girls age 5 - 20 as Pixee is also in this age group.
As well as using long shots, the video also includes a number of mid shots mostly focusing on Pixee to show her connecting with the camera and her audience, mid shots are also used on small details such as on her costume and dancers footwork, this is a very simple yet effective technique they have used.
The dance rountine was set on a roof of a tower building. With the rountine being filmed outdoors it makes the dance look a lot more interesting and appealing. The camera also goes into a pan shot of the dancers to show off their rountine and costumes, it looks very effective as you are able to clearly see what they are doing and whether the dance works well with the song. The music video contains a narrative story that fits in well with the song lyrics and has performance cuts put in to make the video look more interesting to watch. The way that the video brings Pixee across is a very positive image as she looks trendy and is not revealing to much so does not look to perogative. In another scene of the the video performance shots are taken of Pixee walking down the road, a clear straight road, Pixie dancing alone on the roof and sat in the car whilst its raining. These shots contain a lot of close ups to show her emotion, long shots and mid shots to show Pixee dancing and to still capture the emotion in her face.
Extreme close ups are used throughout the video of hands and props such as the mobile phone. This looks effective as it gives the audience a better idea of whats going on in the scene and gives these objects an idea of importance at the points in the video when they are shown.

Ideas for album cover

These are previous 'The Saturdays' album covers that me and my group could recreate. Many include a plain black background which we could do in the photography part of our school with a little bit of editing or photoshop.
The bold writing can easily be done. I particulary like the way they have wrote their band name in the sand, I think it looks very effective and this could be an idea that our group can recreate and add in to our ideas to change it a little.

Conventions of chosen genre

We have choosen to re-invent 'The Saturdays' and call the group 'The Sundays'. The genre that they create in their music and music videos is 'Pop'. A Pop video usually includes fashionable outfits, usually these outfits are quite colorful and easy for fans to copy and create themselves. The outfits are usually colorful because this goes with their upbeat dance routine that appeal to their particular target audience and it makes the video more interesting and eye catching to watch.
The location of the video is tend to usually be either outdoors in a bright light walking down a street or in a park etc, or on a plain white/black/ colorful background in a studio, but this depends on the song as the video theme tends to fit into what the song is about and the message it trys to bring across to the audience.
In the video we have choosen to recreate, 'Work' by 'The Saturdays' it is set in a dark area with flashing spot lights that focus on the characters when there dancing or when one steps forward to sing to make them look effective. It is set on a large stage with them doing a dance rountine each taking it in turn to sing a different part of the song where the camera and lighting focus's on that one person. The camera also does zoom in shots or shots that focus one each of the characters alone either stood up, sat on a sofa or doing a dance move for about 3 or 4 seconds. This is to draw the audience into the characters and because they look appealing they will want to carry on watching the video and possibly return back and watch it on constantly on websites such as 'Youtube.com'.
The video is set in the same place throughout the whole video and they use a variety of shots throughout the video to make the video interesting and appealing.

about each of 'The Saturdays'

Una Hearly - an irish singer, song writer, dancer & guitarist!

Mollie King - an english singer who came from London. She started off as a solo artist and appeared on X factor back in 2005 & 2006!

Rochelle Wiseman - a singer, actor & telelvision presenter who was a member of S club 8 back in her younger days!

Frankie Stanford - is an english singer, who was also a previous member of S club 8, then became a member of a childen's television programme called 'Dream' and is now a member of The Saturdays!

Vanessa White - an english singer who is noted for her extensive vocal change. She has been compared to famous American singers such as Alicia Keys & Beyonce!

'The Saturdays'

The Saturdays are a young girl band that are made up of five young girls around 20 years old, each with their own individual style and personalities. The genre of the music they create is 'Pop'. They appeal to a large target audience that mainly include girls that are ranged from 14 - 20 year olds, although they do appeal to younger and older people, both genders through there music and publicity.
They are of a similar age and they sing songs that can relate to a younger audience and is more appealing for them. The Saturdays put across a very sexy and likeable image as they wear very perogative outfits and their dance routines involve a lot of seductive and sexy movements, to appeal to the fans and put across their image. This would appeal to young females as they may want to try and become like 'The Saturdays' and may think of them as role models, although because of the types of dance moves and outfits they choose to wear this can attract a male audicence aswell.

'Work' lyrics - the song we are going to recreate.

Baby the harder you work the further you get with me. With me.
I think you can. I think you can.
Turn up prepared and make sure you can keep up with me. With Me.
I think you can.I think you can.
But be aware I always get what I deserve.
Keep your focus keep you nerve.
Ready.Set.Go.

Pick up the pace and step on it!
Rip up the place if you want it!
Work!Work!You know you gotta work!Work!

You know you gotta work!Work!

ideas for music video.

For our media project we have decided to produce a music video that will target a young age group ranging from around 14 - 20 years olds. This means the group that we are producing will have to be young, fresh, appealing and unique from other girl bands that have been produced and targeted a large audience of the public such as 'Girls Aloud'. We have choosen to create a girl band similar to the group 'The Saturdays'.
We produced a record label that goes by the name 'Rouge Records' because this name has a feminine feel to it aswell as the name sounding sophisticated and professional image and it fits in well with our idea. Now that we have come to a decision of what the record label was going to be named we then moved on to choosing the name for our girl group to also give across the same image and feel to the name. We were focusing mainly on just 'The Saturdays' and producing a girl band that is very similar we decided on the name The Sundays because we wanted to have a similar theme and relate our name to a weekday/weekend as it sounds catchy.
After deciding on the name of the band the next step was to find or produce a song that we knew would give across a girly image and was a song we all felt confortable with singing and dancing along to. After searching across the internet we decided on the song 'Work' for our music video that was produced by 'The Saturdays' as we all agreed that we prefered this song from the other options, and also the video for this song is quite simple yet effective and gave us a lot of inspiration and ideas that we could do for our video to make it give across a similar girly band image to our target audience.
We decided that our target audience will be mainly young females aged from 14 - 20 year olds, our secondary audience would also be boys in a similar age group. I think that our band would appeal to this audience as we are in this age group and it is the sort of music that a younger group would relate to. its catchy so it will hopefully grap their attention straight away and find it appealing.

evaluation of previous work

From watching a variety of music videos that were produced by other students from different schools we began to see what exam boards are looking for and different ways we can reflect our genres. Through watching these videos I gained many ideas that I could use in my practical work such as different camera shots to create different feels at the right time, or to use a black and white effect to create a different vibe for the audience, as black and white brings across a gloomy feel to an audience.
I started of watching the music videos, they were really good and the different genres they chose really reflected through there use of different camera work and camera angles. Also some of the music videos contained split screen shots so you could see what emotion both of the characters had at the same time. This made it really interesting to watch as you got to see how both characters felt and they made this shot work well with the story line and the background song they chose to use. This inspired me to create a similar shot in my music video as the audience will be able to see the emotions of each character.
Flashbacks were also very effectively used in many of the music videos. I exspecily liked the way they used this shot as you learn more about the characters memories and it helps you to understand the storyline a lot more. Flashbacks look very appealing to watch when they use the effect of black and white because it creates a emotional tone, sadness feel to the scene, creates a dark and gloomy feel. Flashbacks can symbolise past events whether they are good or bad, but also it can symbolise time.
I think that by analysing a variety of music videos it has benifited me and my group because it has given us a lot of inspiration to produce a music video. It has also showed us the challenge it is going to be to make our music video look effective and reflect our genre through different effects, angle and camera shots. Also it has helped us to think about what story line we could produce and how we can create an effect story to use in our music video. It has also given us alot of creative ideas that we could use in our music video to attract a wide audience.

creative techniques.

Through watching another member of my classmate's work I have seen many different creative techniques they have used which made there video look more effective. This would benefit me to use in my A2 practical as it would show that I understand creative techniques and how they are used, but also it will show I know how to use a variety of skills effectively.
The genre of the video they were producing was 'horror' and the theme they decided to use 'suspicious' and to create tension for the audience and have the audience being drawn into the video they used a dark filter technique in the editing software. This was an effect technique for them to use as it made the video look gloomy and dark, then when you seen the dead body on the floor you immediately begin to think of questions and wonder who killed the person. To bring across the 'suspicious' theme they made sure couldn't see the murder, to do this they had the character in a hooded jacket to create tension and suspense. This will leave the audience wondering and thinking off questions that are left unanswered as throughout the whole video you do not see the murder's face.
I think that by the group using a wide range of creative techniques such as tilt to show the crime scene and the reaction to the death, pan to show a view of the killer behind to create suspicion and leave them unaware of the murder.

skills development.

In my previous pre-production and practical work which I completed in As Media last year I created a music magazine to reflect the genre 'Hip-hop/RnB'. From creating this practical it benifited me as I have now have a lot of strengths I can use to produce another practical for my A2 media coursework, although from making a music magaizne I also learnt that I have many weaknesses that I need to work on to improve.

Researching existing media from either magazines or by using the Internet/ Web 2.0 and then applying all of this research into a detailed analysis on my blog. I found out that this was a strength of mine, I felt relatively confident in doing this. By researching different types of media products and analysising their work, i.e picking out what type of camera shot they used, font to reflect the genre has helped me to gain ideas to build upon and in the process I also learnt many researching skills that I could use in my practical. By researching existing media products it allowed me to learn alot about how a company can think of an idea/ a genre and then bring the genre across to the audience by using particular colors and fonts. I researched many media products when creating my practical. This skill was a strength of mine because I could find a product and then evaluate it in detail onto my blog without any problems and I felt confident with doing this.

The weaknesses in my pre-production that I seemed to struggle doing were the Instiutions research and applying this towards my practical. When researching companies that would distribute my music magazine I researched on the internet to find suitable companies. I should have researched these companies in more depth by using more resources such as magazines and books to have more knowledge on the company and possibly found more existing companies I could have chosen to use. Also a weakness of mine was not applying enough detail to my blog abou the company that could have distributed my music magazine due to not researching in depth about the companies. This would have made the evaluation alot easier and it would have also given me a lot more time to work with as I spent a while researching through the internet to find a suitable company. Although researching a company in depth was my weakness it has helped me to learn researching skills and how I can get this information from the internet and use this in my work, I can use these skills for my A2 practical work.

Another weakness of mine was Time Management. Time is a very important section that needs to be planned of effectively in order to finish the pracitcal on time. I spent a lot of time on my pre- production researching and applying information onto a blog so I could go back and refer to the information when working on my practical. I spent a lot of time doing this because I needed to make sure I understood what to include on a music magazine and to make sure I researched enough about how a music magazine is reflected to a particular audience.

When producting my practical my stronger areas were planning my layouts and making sure I used all of the space well and did not make everything on my front cover, contents page and double page spread look to compacked and making sure all of the information was readable.
I made sure I knew what types of images I wanted to include in my magazine and I had to make sure this reflected my genre to a wide audience.

Whereas a main weaker area of mine was using photoshop as it was only my second time with using the software and having to remember how to edit and use certain tools was difficult, such as the 'magic wand tool' this was were you had to be as careful as possible when cutting an image to make sure the edges were smooth and not rugged. I have definitly learnt alot through using the software and producing my practical on this, but this is an area that I could improve on.

Through doing a pre production practical where I had to produce a college magazine using the Photoshop software this allowed me to see what challenge my Practical would be for me. It helped me alot because after producing my pre-production practical I knew what to expect and I had began to grasp some skills such as how to change the color font, background and how to move certain text boxs around using the software. By doing research I learnt alot about different types of genres and how they reflect them to the audience through different colors, pictures and layouts.

Working on your own can be quite difficult at times because you have to do the whole practical to your best standards all by yourself and the research has to be done by yourself. Both of these areas take alot of time and alot of work has to be done in a specific amount of time which will make it harder when you only have yourself to rely on. Although working in a group comes along with alot of responsibilites and group members are relying on you constantly to do your bit for the practical thats why when working on your own you only have yourself to rely on and do not have to work about others not doing something wrong, but also you are more independent and can get the job done quicker.

Overall, I think that I have learnt alot of skills since producing my A-level practical that I can carry through to my A2 practical and build upon these skills. With my strengths I can carry on working on them and improving them when working on the practical, whereas with my weaknesses I can work hard to improve on them and produce a practical that reflects my skills and knowledge at a high standard.
